Great Kids Farm is part of a growing national movement to promote sustainable, local, healthy food in schools and communities. Our location in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, gives our community unique access to the abundance of incredible food that comes from rich alluvial soils and the largest estuary in the United States.
For thousands of years, this natural wealth sustained vibrant Mid-Atlantic communities. Today, the renewed connections between Baltimore’s local farms and urban communities are recreating a nourishing food culture. Most of our students and young people have grown up during an era when fast, cheap food was their most available and identifiable food option. This is now changing with delicious, healthful, humanely-raised food being produced all around Baltimore City – and within it!
Baltimore city’s unique microclimate makes it possible to grow vegetables year round (many hardy greens grow in the city without protection even in the middle of winter). What’s more, Baltimore is probably the most-Northern area of the East Coast where fruits like figs and persimmons thrive without special care.
Great Kids Farm is proud to be part of a thriving local movement of people and organizations that are cultivating a just, healthful, diverse and sustainable food landscape in Baltimore and beyond. For further information, visit:
