Great Kids Farm is a living, working farm that educates children about healthy eating, organic farming and the natural sciences. We connect young people to the soil, plants, and animals that provide their food. We also teach them about sustainable farming practices used to generate this food in an environmentally friendly way.
Operated by Baltimore City Public Schools, the 33-acre Catonsville farm is integral to the school system's efforts to improve school food and educate children and families about how nutritious foods form the foundation for healthy people and a sound environment.
Farm staff, Baltimore City students and community volunteers community volunteers
have worked tirelessly to give new life to this historic farm school. Together, we have cultivated 14 living systems, including vegetable gardens, composting worms, fruit trees, honeybees, mushrooms, goats and chickens which collectively reveal the diversity and interconnectedness of the nourishment humans derive from the earth.
Children, teachers and the broader community connect with these living systems by visiting the Farm and by replicating the Farm gardens and programs at their local schools. Young people use the Farm to learn skills that prepare them for successful careers.
We complement and sustain these efforts by growing and harvesting food for the public through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and farmers markets and by being an active player in local and national efforts to promote the eating of fresh, local and nutritious food.
We could not have achieved the remarkable transformation of this Farm, created educational programs, scheduled so many field trips, or formed so many robust partnerships without strong community supporters and cheerleaders
